The Moon Sails Out

          Federico Garcia Lorca

   When the moon sails out
the church bells die away
and the paths overgrown
with brush appear.

   When the moon sails out
the waters cover the earth
and the heart feels it is
a little island in the infinite.

   No one eats oranges
under the full moon.
The right things are fruits
green and chilled.

   When the moon sails out
with a hundred faces all the same,
the coins made of silver
break out in the sobs in the pocket.

달이 떠오르니

   페데리코 가르시아 로르카

   달이 떠오르니
교회 종소리 잦아들고
떨기나무 무성한
오솔길들 드러난다

  달이 떠오르니
바다가 온 뭍을 덮고
내 가슴 망망대해의
작은 섬 같아라

   둥근 달 아래에서는
아무도 귤들을 먹지 않으리
달빛 아래 어울리는 과일은
푸르고 차가운 것들

    달이 모두 똑같은
일백의 얼굴로 떠오르니
주머니 속 은전(銀錢)들
갑자기 흐느낌을 터뜨리네

brush: 땔나무. 잎나무. 관목의 밀생지.
infinite: 무한. 무한한 공간.
chilled: 차갑게 한.
sob: 흐느낌.

페데리코 가르시아 로르카 Federico Garcia Lorca (1899-1936)

에스파냐 극작가·시인. 그라나다 근처의 부유한 농가에서 태어나, 어릴 때부터 시와 음악을 애호하였다. 그라나다대학에서 철학·법학을 수학하고 1919년 마드리드에 나가 문단에 데뷔하였다. 에스파냐공화국이 수립되자 극단을 조직하여 농촌을 순회공연, 33∼34년에는 아르헨티나에서 순회 공연을 했으며, 귀국하자 36년에 내란이 일어나 팔랑헤당원(黨員)에게 총살당했다. 그림 및 음악에도 재능을 보였으며 특히 그라나다에서 M. 팔랴와의 만남으로 음악에 깊은 흥미를 갖게 되어 민요에 관심을 가지고 에스파냐 각지로 채보(採譜)여행도 했다. 시집 《집시가집(歌集, 1928)》, 희극 《베르나르다 알바의 집(1936)》《피의 결혼(1933)》《예르마(Yerma, 1934)》 등이 있다.
