D. H. 로렌스 D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930)

로렌스는 우리에게 소설가로 널리 알려져 있지만 시인으로서도 좋은 작품들을 많이 남겼고 뛰어난 평론과 산문도 많이 남겼다. 영국 노팅검에서 광부의 아들로 태어났다. 그의 생애에 대해서는 그의 자전적 소설 [아들과 연인 Sons and Lovers](1913)를 보면 많은 것을 알 수 있다. 기계 문명에 위축된 정신 세계와 특히 성적 에너지의 회복을 주장하였다. [채털리 남작 부인의 연인 Lady Chatterley's Lover](1929)은 과감한 성적 묘사로 한때 외설문학으로 치부되어 여러 나라에서 출판이 금지되는 우여곡절을 겪었지만 이제는 진지하고도 문학성 높은 작품으로 평가받고 있다. 그밖에 [무지개 The Rainbow](1915), [사랑하는 여인들 Women in Love](1920) 등의 소설들을 남겼고 널리 읽히는 그의 시로서는 "뱀(Snake)", "피아노(Piano)" 등이 있다. 비평서로서는 [고전 미국문학 연구](1923) 등이 유명하다. 1930년 프랑스의 프로방스에서 타계.
