If I Had My Life To Live Over

          Nadine Stair


I'd dare to make more mistakes next time.
I'd relax, I would limber up.
I would be sillier than I have been on this trip.
I would take fewer things seriously.
I would take more chances.
I would take more trips.
I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers. I would eat more ice cream and less beans.
I would perhaps have more actual troubles, but I'd have fewer imaginary ones.
You see, I'm one of those people who live sensibly and sanely hour after hour, day after day.
Oh, I've had my moments, and if I had it to do over again, I'd have more of them. In fact, I'd try to have nothing else. Just moments.
One after another, instead of living so many years ahead of each day.
I've been one of those persons who never goes anywhere without a thermometer, a hot water bottle, a raincoat and a parachute.
If I had to do it again, I would travel lighter than I have.

If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall.
I would go to more dances.
I would ride more merry-go-rounds.
I would pick more daisies.

     

인생을 다시 산다면

          내딘 스테어


이번에는 실수를 더 많이 하리라.
느긋하고 유연하게 살리라.
지금보다 더 어리석어지리라.
심각하게 생각하는 버릇을 줄이고
대담하게 더 많은 기회를 붙잡으리라.
여행도 더 많이 다니련다.
산에도 더 자주 오르고 강에도 더 자주 가련다. 아이스크림은 더 많이 먹고 콩은 줄이리라.
현실의 괴로움은 늘어날 터이나 가상의 괴로움은 줄어들리라.
보다시피, 나는 시간 시간, 하루하루를 분별 있고 건전하게 사는 사람
오, 나는 의미 있는 순간들을 체험해 보았다. 하여 다시 산다면, 그러한 순간을 더 많이 체험하리라. 사실, 다른 것은 원하지 않느니 그런 순간들이면 족하리라.
기나긴 세월을 바라보며 하루하루 살지 않고, 한 순간 한 순간을 살리라.
나는 여태까지 온도계와, 온수병과, 비옷과, 낙하산 없이는 어느 곳도 가지 못하는 사람이었나니
다시 산다면, 이번엔 가벼이 차리고 여행하리라.

내가 다시 산다면 이른 봄에 맨발로 시작하여 늦가을까지 맨발로 다니리라.
춤추는 곳에 더 자주 가련다.
회전목마를 더 자주 타련다.
데이지 꽃을 더 많이 따련다.

나는 지금 바로 여기에서 행복한 사람
언어와 인종, 살아온 환경과 경험이 다른 사람한테서 같은 느낌과 감정을 공유한다는 것은 얼마나 멋진 일인지요.
