Talking to Grief

Denise Levertov

Ah, Grief, I should not treat you
like a homeless dog
who comes to the back door
for a crust, for a meatless bone.
I should trust you.

I should coax you
into the house and give you
your own corner,
a worn mat to lie on,
your own water dish.

You think I don't know you've been living
under my porch.
You long for your real place to be readied
before winter comes. You need
your name,
your collar and tag. You need
the right to warn off intruders,
to consider
my house your own
and me your person
and yourself
my own dog.

아 슬픔이여, 나는 너를
빵부스러기나, 살 없는 뼈다귀를 얻으러
뒷문으로 오는
집 없는 개처럼 대해선 안 되겠지
나는 너를 믿어야 해.

나는 너를 달래
집안으로 들어오게 하여
네가 자리 할 구석을 내어주어야겠어.
네가 앉을 낡은 매트와
네가 사용할 물 접시를.

네가 내 집 문간 밑에서 살고 있었다는 걸
내가 모르는 줄 알고 있겠지.
넌 겨울이 오기 전에 살 집이 마련되는 걸
바라고 있잖아. 너는
이름이 필요해.
목걸이와 이름표가 있어야지.
침입자를 물리칠 권리도 있어야 해.
내 집을 네 집으로
생각하고
나를 네 사람으로 생각하고
너 자신을
나의 개로 생각해 주었으면 해.

meatless: 살점이 달라붙어 있지 않은.
coax: 달래다. 구슬리다.
porch: (튀어나온) 현관.
tag: 이름표.
warn off: 경고하여 못들어오게 하다.

드니즈 레버토브 Denise Levertov (1923-1998)

영국 태생의 미국 시인. 17세에 첫 시를 발표했다. 20대에 미국으로 이민하여 윌리엄 칼로즈 윌리엄즈의 영향을 받았고 블랙 마운튼 시인들인 로버트 크릴리, 찰즈 올슨, 로버트 던컨 등의 시인들과 교류하였다. 1960년대와 70년대의 반전운동과 반핵운동에 페미니스트 운동가로 활동하였으며 1982년부터 1993년 사이에는 스탠포드 대학에서 가르쳤다. 20세기 후반의 주요 시인 가운데 하나로 평가받고 있다. The Sorrow Dance (1967), Freeing the Dust (1975), Breathing the Water (1987), The Sands of the Well (1996) 등을 포함한 23권의 시집 외에 많은 수필집, 번역 시집 등을 남기고 있다.
