Sonnet 35

              William Shakespeare


No more be grieved at that which thou hast done:
Roses have thorns, and silver fountains mud;
Clouds and eclipses stain both moon and sun,
And loathsome canker lives in sweetest bud.
All men make faults, and even I in this,
Authorizing thy trespass with compare,
Myself corrupting, salving thy amiss,
Excusing thy sins more than thy sins are;
For to thy sensual fault I bring in sense--
Thy adverse party is thy advocate--
And 'gainst myself a lawful plea commence:
Such civil war is in my love and hate
  That I an accessary needs must be
  To that sweet thief which sourly robs from me.

당신이 저지른 짓을 이제 그만 슬퍼하세요.
장미엔 가시가 있고, 맑은 샘에도 진흙이 있잖아요.
구름과 천체가 해와 달을 침침하게 가리고
어여쁜 꽃봉오리에도 역겨운 벌레가 산답니다.
사람은 누구나 실수를 하는 법, 나도 지금 그래요.
비유를 사용해 당신의 잘못을 정당화하고
당신의 허물을 용서해 나 자신을 더럽히고
당신의 죄과를 변명해 주는 건 그 죄보다 더하거든요.
당신이 몸으로 저지른 실수에 이성을 끌어대고.
당신의 적대자가 당신의 변호인이 되어서
자신에 거슬러 법에 맞도록 변론을 하니까요.
사랑과 미움이 그처럼 내란을 일으키니
   내 것을 아프게 뺏어가는 귀여운 도둑과
   나 자신 공범이 되는 수밖에 딴 도리가 없군요.

Notes:

grieve: 슬퍼하다.
thou hast done: you have done에 해당하는 옛 어법.
thorn: 가시.
mud: 진흙.
eclipse: 한 천체가 다른 천체를 가리는 것. 일식, 월식.
stain: 얼룩지게 하다. 더럽히다.
loathsome: 미운. 혐오스러운.
canker: 암종병. 식물의 줄기가 부패하는 병. 또는 자벌레인 cankerworm을 가리킬 수도 있다.
authorize: 정당하다고 인정하다.
thy: your의 옛 어법.
trespass: 죄. 위반. 부정.
corrupt: 타락시키다. 더럽히다.
salving thy amiss: salve=(괴로움을) 달래다. amiss=> 원래는 “잘못하여”라는 뜻의 부사인데 셰익스피어는 이것을 명사 용법으로 사용하고 있다.
adverse party: 반대편. 여기에서는 고발인 혹은 원고.
advocate: 변호인.
'gainst myself: against myself.
plea: 변명. (피고의) 답변. 탄원.
commence: 시작하다.
civil war: 내란.
That I an accessary needs must be: That I needs must be an accesary. accessary = 종범. 방조자. needs must = 반드시 ~여야 한다.
thief: 도둑.
sourly: 기분 나쁘게. 마음 아프게.

윌리엄 셰익스피어 William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

영국의 세계적인 문호. 에이븐의 가인(Bard of Avon)이라는 별칭을 가지고 있다. 그는 에이븐 강 가의 스트래트퍼드(Stratford-upon-Avon)에서 태어나 청년기에 런던으로 상경, 배우로서 연기하고 작가로서 희곡을 쓰고 시인으로서 시를 쓰는 사람이 되었다. 교육 배경에 대해서는 모호하지만 책을 많이 읽고 상상력이 뛰어난 천재였던 것으로 여겨진다. 당대 최고의 인기를 누렸고 당시 영국을 다스리던 엘리자베스 여왕의 총애도 얻었다고 한다. 그는 희극, 비극, 사극 37편의 극과 154편의 소네트를 썼다. 그가 사용한 말은 오늘의 각종 인용구 사전에서 가장 많은 부피를 차지할 정도로 많은 사람들의 입에 오르내리고 있지만 <사느냐 죽느냐 To be or not to be>라는 구절 하나만으로도 그는 영국만의 셰익스피어가 아니고 인류의 셰익스피어가 되었다고 할 수 있겠다.
