When I Have Fears

                John Keats


When I have fears that I may cease to be  
  Before my pen has gleaned my teeming brain,
Before high-piled books, in charact'ry,
  Hold like rich garners the full-ripened grain;
When I behold, upon the night's starred face,
  Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,
And think that I may never live to trace
  Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance;
And when I feel, fair creature of an hour!
  That I shall never look upon thee more,
Never have relish in the faery power
  Of unreflecting love!;—then on the shore
Of the wide world I stand alone, and think
  Till Love and Fame to nothingness do sink.

            

죽을지도 모른다는 두려움이 생길 때

죽을지도 모른다는 두려움이 생길 때,
  나의 펜이 넘쳐나는 생각을 수확하기 전에
높이 쌓인 책들이 넉넉한 곳간처럼
  글자로써, 잘 여문 곡식알을 채우기 전에
별빛 박힌 밤하늘에 거대한 구름이 그리는
  아기자기한 옛 얘기의 상징을 바라보며
타고난 마술의 손으로 그 자취를 찾기 전
  행여 죽을지도 모른다는 생각이 들 때,
또한 한 때 짧게 만났던 아름다운 그대
  그대 다시 보지 못하리라 느껴지고
분별없는 사랑의 마술도 이제 끝이라고
  생각되어질 때, 나는 광막한 세계의
해변에 외로이 서서 생각에 잠깁니다.
사랑과 명예가 허무한 것이 될 때까지.

cease to be: 존재하기를 그치다. 죽다.  
glean: (이삭 등을) 줍다. 주워 모으다.
teeming: (동물이) 다산의. (창조력이) 풍부한.
charact'ry: 운율을 위해 charactery를 한 음절 줄인 것. 문자.
garner: 곡물 창고.
high romance: 아기자기한 사연이 담긴 옛 이야기.
fair creature of an hour: 한정된 시간의 아름다운 생명.
thee: 목적격 you의 옛 어법.
relish: 맛.
faery: 요정의. 마법의.
unreflecting: 반성하지 않는. 지각없는.
Till Love and Fame to nothingness do sink: = Till Love and Fame do sink to nothingness.
fame: 명성.

존 키츠 John Keats (1795-1821)

 영국의 낭만주의 시인. 런던에서 마차 대여업자의 아들로 태어나 소년시절에 부모를 여의었다. 클라크 사숙(私塾)을 졸업한 후 생계를 위해 남의 집 서생(書生)이 되기도 하고, 병원에 근무하기도 하였다. 그러는 가운데에도 시인이 될 희망을 품고 독서와 시작(詩作)에 몰두하였다. 의학을 배워 의사 시험에 합격하였으나 친구들의 권유로 병원을 그만두고 시작에 몰두하여 22세에 첫시집 [시집(詩集)]을 출판하고, 이듬해에 장시(長詩) [엔디미언 Endymion]을 발표한다. 이 작품들로는 썩 좋은 평을 받지 못했으나 패니 브라운과 사랑에 빠지면서 잇달아 훌륭한 시들을 써 내기 시작했다. 중세풍의 담시(譚詩) “성 아그네스의 전야”(1820) “성 마르코 전야”, “무정한 미인” 등을 비롯하여 “그리스 항아리에 부치는 노래 On a Grecian Urn”, “나이팅게일에게 To a Nightingale”(1818), “가을에 To Autumn” 등 일련의 송시(頌詩)가 잇달아 발표되었다. 걸작 “하이피리언의 몰락 The Fall of Hyperion”도 나왔다. 24세가 되던 1819년은 놀라울 만큼 많은 시가 쏟아져 나오던 해였다. 그러나 지병인 폐결핵의 악화로 요양을 위하여 이탈리아로 건너가나 몇 달이 못 되어 25년 4개월이라는 짧은 생애를 로마에서 마치고 만다.
