What We Want

Linda Pastan

What we want
is never simple.
We move among the things
we thought we wanted:
a face, a room, an open book
and these things bear our names--
now they want us.
But what we want appears
in dreams, wearing disguises.
We fall past,
holding out our arms
and in the morning
our arms ache.
We don't remember the dream,
but the dream remembers us.
It is there all day
as an animal is there
under the table,
as the stars are there
even in full sun.

우리가 원하는 것

린다 패스턴

우리가 원하는 것은
단순하지가 않다.
우리는 우리가 원한다고 생각했던
것들 사이를 움직인다.
얼굴이며, 방이며, 펼쳐진 책
이것들에는 우리의 이름들이 쓰여 있다.
이제는 그것들이 우리를 원한다.
하지만 우리가 원하는 것은
꿈에 가면을 쓰고 나타난다.
우리는 두 팔을 벌리고
더듬다 쓰러진다.
그래서 아침이면
두 팔이 아프다.
우리는 꿈을 기억하지 못하지만
그 꿈이 우리를 기억한다.
꿈은 온종일 거기에 있다.
테이블 밑에 애완동물이
앉아 있는 것처럼,
백주 대낮에도 별들이
거기에 있는 것처럼.

린다 패스턴 Linda Pastan (1932 - )

뉴욕에서 태어난 미국 시인. 래드클리프 대학을 졸업한 다음 브랜다이즈 대학에서 석사를 했고, 1991년과 1994년까지 메릴랜드 주 계관시인을 지냈다. 현재 매릴랜드 주 포토맥에서 살고 있다. 시집으로 A Perfect Circle of Sun(1971), The Five Stages of Grief(1978), PM/AM: New and Selected Poems(1982), The Imperfect Paradise(1988), Heroes in Disguise(1991), An Early Afterlife(1995), Carnival Evening: New And Selected Poems 1968-1998(1998) 등을 포함하여 10권을 내고 있다. 많은 대학에서 시 낭송을 했고 여러 기관과 대학에서 여러 상과 연구비를 받았다.
