(Sonnet 60)

Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,
So do our minutes hasten to their end,
Each changing place with that which goes before
In sequent toil all forwards do contend.
Nativity, once in the main of light,
Crawls to maturity, wherewith being crowned,
Crookèd eclipses 'gainst his glory fight
And Time that gave, doth now his gift confound.
Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth,
And delves the parallels in beauty's brow,
Feeds on the rarities of nature's truth,
And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow.
  And yet to times in hope my verse shall stand,
  Praising thy worth, despite his cruel hand.

조약돌 깔린 바닷가로 파도가 달려가듯
우리의 분초도 종말을 향해서 서두른다.
매순간 앞서간 것들과 자리를 바꾸면서
모두가 열심히 다투며 앞으로 내달린다.
아이가 새로이 광명의 세계에 태어나면
천천히 성숙에 이르러 정점에 오르지만
악의에 가득찬 불개가 광휘에 덤벼들면
세월은 자신이 주었던 선물을 앗아간다.
세월은 청춘에 장식한 꽃장식 떼어내고
미인의 이마에 기다란 주름을 새기면서
자연이 주었던 진기한 것들을 삼켜버린다.
세월의 낫질을 이겨낼 존재는 아무도 없다.
  그러나 내 시는 시간의 잔인한 손을 이겨서
  시간에 맞서서 그대의 가치를 찬양하리라.

the pebbled shore: 조약돌이 깔린 해안.
our minutes: 우리들 삶의 일분일초의 시간들.
hasten: 서두르다.
In sequent toil: 연속적인 노력을 통해.
contend: 다투다. 싸우다. 경쟁하다.
Nativity: 탄생.
main: 대해. 대양. 본토(mainland).
Crawls: 기다. 기어가다.
maturity: 성숙.
wherewith: 그것으로.
being crowned: 왕관이 씌어지다. 절정기에 이르다.
Crooked eclipses 'gainst his glory fight: Crooked eclipses fight against his glory
doth now his gift confound: doth now confound his gift. doth는 옛 어법으로 do 동사의 삼인칭 단수.
confound: 좌절시키다. 파멸시키다.
transfix: 꿰뚫다. 꼼작 못하게 하다.
flourish: 가장 아름다운 부분. 음악의 장식구.
delve: (도랑 등을) 파다.
brow: 이마.
Feeds on : -- 을 먹이로 하다.
rarities: -->rarity. 진기한 것.
scythe: 풀베는 낫.
mow: 베다. 베어들이다.
verse: 운문. 시.
thy: your의 옛 어법.

윌리엄 셰익스피어 William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

영국의 세계적인 문호. 에이븐의 가인(Bard of Avon)이라는 별칭을 가지고 있다. 그는 에이븐 강 가의 스트래트퍼드(Stratford-upon-Avon)에서 태어나 청년기에 런던으로 상경, 배우로서 연기하고 작가로서 희곡을 쓰고 시인으로서 시를 쓰는 사람이 되었다. 교육 배경에 대해서는 모호하지만 책을 많이 읽고 상상력이 뛰어난 천재였던 것으로 여겨진다. 당대 최고의 인기를 누렸고 당시 영국을 다스리던 엘리자베스 여왕의 총애도 얻었다고 한다. 그는 희극, 비극, 사극 37편의 극과 154편의 소네트를 썼다. 그가 사용한 말은 오늘의 각종 인용구 사전에서 가장 많은 부피를 차지할 정도로 많은 사람들의 입에 오르내리고 있지만 <사느냐 죽느냐 To be or not to be>라는 구절 하나만으로도 그는 영국만의 셰익스피어가 아니고 인류의 셰익스피어가 되었다고 할 수 있겠다.
