How will it happen
the final exitus
will it be violent
will it hurt
or will it be quiet
full of silence
Will the sordid images
that have haunted us
be suddenly erased
or will they be replayed
endlessly replayed
in virtual reality
Will we fall
or will we rise
or simply pass through
as one goes through
an open door
to enter a room
Perhaps it will be
an escape
another escape
from the little box
where it all started
among empty skins
But this time it will be
the final escape
from the great cunt
of existence
and this time
without any gurgling
Will the stolen sugar be
as sweet as the first time
and what of the moon
tiptoeing on the roof
will she smile upon us
or remain indifferent
Will there be words
left to describe what
is taking place
words and silences
or will there be only
cries and whispers |

아플까
아니면 적막 속에
조용히 일어날까
우리를 괴롭혀온
더러운 영상들이
갑자기 지워질까
아니면 재생될까
한없이 재생될까
가상현실 속에서
우리는 쓰러질까
아니면 일어설까
아니면 그저 지나갈까
사람들이
열린 문을 지나
방으로 들어서듯
아마도 그건
탈출이 될 거야
텅 빈 살가죽 둘러쓰고
모든 것이 시작된
조그만 상자로부터
또 한 번 탈출하는 일이 될 거야
하지만 이번은
존재의 거대한
음부로부터의
마지막 탈출이 되겠지
그리고 이번에는
꾸륵 소리도 없을 거야
훔친 설탕이
처음처럼 달콤할까
지붕 위를 사뿐히 걷는
달님은
우리에게 미소 지을까
아니면 무심할까
무슨 일이 일어나는지
말해 줄 말들이 남아 있을까
말들과 침묵들이 . .
아니면 다만
비명과 속삭임뿐일까 |

exitus: 라틴어로 “퇴장”, “출구”, “죽음”을 나타내는 말. 영어로는 exit.
sordid: 더러운. 야비한.
haunt: (어떤 생각이) 떠나지 않다. 괴롭히다.
erase: 지우다.
replay: 재연하다. (테이프 등을) 재생시키다.
virtual reality: 가상현실
cunt: 여성의 성기. 음부.
gurgle: 꾸르르 목을 울리다.
tiptoe: 발끝으로 걷다.

레이먼드 페더만 Raymond Federman (1928 - )
미국의 소설가, 시인, 에세이스트, 번역가, 비평가. 프랑스에서 태어나 19세에 미국으로 이민하였다. 컬럼비아 대학과 캘리포니아 주립대학 수학. 1973년과 1999년 사이에 버펄로 대학에서 가르쳤고 현재도 같은 대학의 석좌교수로 있다. 실험적인 수법의 글을 쓰는 것으로 유명하다. 중요한 저술에는 The Beasts (1967), Double or Nothing (1971), Take It or Leave It (1976), The Voice in the Closet (1979), The Twofold Vibration (1982), Smiles on Washington Square (1985), To Whom It May Concern (1990) 등 다수가 있다.
