A slumber did my spirit seal;
      I had no human fears:
She seemed a thing that could not feel
      The touch of earthly years.

No motion has she now, no force;
     She neither hears nor sees;
Rolled round in earth's diurnal course,
    With rocks, and stones, and trees.

그녀는 땅 위 세월의 손길을
        느끼지 못하는 사물 같았지

그녀는 이제 힘없어 움직이지 못하고
        듣지도 보지도 못하는구나
바위, 돌멩이들, 나무와 함께
        지구의 자전 행로를 돌고 있을 뿐

윌리엄 워즈워드 William Wordsworth (1770-1850)

영국의 계관시인. 잉글런드 북부에서 변호사의 아들로 태어났으나 어린 시절에 부모를 잃고 백부의 보호 아래 성장했다. 케임브리지 대학을 마치고 프랑스로 건너가 때마침 절정기에 이른 프랑스 혁명에서 큰 감명을 받는다. 오를레앙에 머무는 동안 발롱(Annette Vallon)이라는 여성과 사랑에 빠져 딸을 낳았다. 프랑스 혁명으로 영국과 프랑스 사이의 국교가 악화되자 그는 공화주의적인 정열과 조국애 사이의 갈등으로 깊은 고뇌에 빠진다. 그후 앨폭스던 가까이 살고 있던 S. T. 코울리지(Coleridge)와 친교를 맺고 그로부터 많은 영향을 받는다. 두 시인이 1798년에 공동으로 펴낸 <서정민요집(Lyrical Ballads)>에서 코울리지가 초자연적이고도 환상적인 세계를, 워즈워드는 전원과 시골을 배경으로 자연의 장엄함을 다룸으로써, 영문학 사상 낭만주의 부활의 한 시기를 결정짓는 시집으로 남게 된다. "서정민요집"을 펴낸 다음 10년간 워즈워드는 가장 왕성하게 시를 썼으며, 그 결과 <마이클(Michael)>, <서곡(The Prelude)> 등을 출간하였고, 장편시 <소요(The Excursion)>를 완성하였으나 이 무렵부터 그의 작품도 도덕적 보수적 색채가 짙어지게 된다.
