The Visitant

Theodore Roethke

Slow, slow as a fish she came,
Slow as a fish coming forward,
Swaying in a long wave;
Her skirts not touching a leaf,
Her white arms reaching towards me.
She came without sound,
Without brushing the wet stones,
In the soft dark of early evening,
She came.
The wind in her hair,
The moon beginning.

천천히, 물고기처럼 천천히 그녀는 왔다
긴 물결에 흔들리는
물고기처럼 천천히 다가왔다
치맛자락에 이파리 하나 스치지 않고
흰 두 팔을 나를 향해 뻗었다
그녀는 소리 없이 왔다
젖은 돌들을 스치지도 않고
저물녘 부드러운 어둠 속으로
그녀는 왔다
그녀의 머리칼에 바람이 일고
달이 떠오르기 시작했다

시오도어 레트커 Theodore Roethke (1908 - 1963)

풀 네임은 시오도어 휴브너 레트커(Theodore Huebner Roethke). 미국 시인. 미시간 대학과 하바드 대학에서 공부하고, 와싱턴 대학을 비롯하여 여러 대학에서 가르쳤다. 만년에는 우울증으로 병원 생활을 했다. 첫 시집 <열린 집 Open House>을 1941년에 내어 오든(W. H. Auden)으로부터 대단한 호평을 받았다. 이어 <잃어버린 아들 기타 The Lost Son and Other Poems>(1948), <종말에 대한 찬양 Praise to the End!>(1951)을 내었고 1953년에 낸 <깨어남 The Waking: Poems 1933-1953>은 시 부분 퓰리처 상을 받았다. <바람을 위한 말 Words for the Wind>(1957)은 볼링겐 상(Bollingen Prize)과 전미도서상(National Book Award)을 받았고, 1964년에는 <머나먼 들판 The Far Field>으로 두 번째 전미도서상을 받는다. 에세이와 강연 모음집으로 <시인과 그의 기술에 대해 On the Poet and His Craft>(1965)가 있다. 깊은 내면 성찰과 강렬한 서정성을 가진 시로 주목받고 있다. 그 가운데에는 러시아에서 이민 와서 온실을 경영했던 강한 개성의 부친에 대한 애증을 표현한 시들도 더러 있다.
