The pearl

Is a disease of the oyster.

A poem

Is a disease of the spirit

Caused by the irritation

Of a granule of Truth

Fallen into that soft gray bivalve

We call the mind.

조개에 생긴 병이라면

시는

영혼에 생긴 병

우리가 정신이라 부르는

여린 회색 조개 속에 떨어진

진리의 작은 알갱이가

자극하여 생긴 것

크리스토퍼 몰리 Christopher Morley (1890–1957)

미국의 언론인, 소설가, 시인, 수필가. 펜실베니어 주 브린 모어에서 태어나 헤이버퍼드 대학과 뉴 콜리지에서 공부했다. 졸업 뒤 뉴욕으로 가서 출판사 일을 하면서 글을 쓰기 시작했고, 필라델피아와 뉴욕에서 기자와 컬럼니스트로 활동했다. [토요문학비평]지의 창간에 참여하여 오랫동안 편집일을 보았고 셜록 홈즈 이야기에 심취해 셜록 홈즈 전집이 출판될 때 서문을 쓰기도 했다. [이 달의 책 클럽 the Book-of-the Month Club]의 평가자로도 일했다. 대표작으로 소설 Kitty Foyle (1939), Thunder on the Left (1925), The Haunted Bookshop (1919), Parnassus on Wheels (1917) 등이 있다. 모두 100권이 넘는 소설, 에세이, 시집 등을 남겼다.
