When Death Comes Mary Oliver When death comes like the hungry bear in autumn; when death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse to buy me, and snaps the purse shut; when death comes like the measles-pox; when death comes like an iceberg between the shoulder blades, I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering: what is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness? And therefore I look upon everything as a brotherhood and a sisterhood, and I look upon time as no more than an idea, and I consider eternity as another possibility, and I think of each life as a flower, as common as a field daisy, and as singular, and each name a comfortable music in the mouth tending as all music does, toward silence, and each body a lion of courage, and something precious to the earth. When it's over, I want to say: all my life I was a bride married to amazement. I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms. When it is over, I don't want to wonder if I have made of my life something particular, and real. I don't want to find myself sighing and frightened, or full of argument. I don't want to end up simply having visited this world. |

죽음이 오면 메어리 올리버 가을의 굶주린 곰처럼 죽음이 오면 죽음이 와서 나를 사려고 지갑에서 번쩍이는 동전을 죄다 꺼낸 뒤 지갑을 척 닫으면 홍역과 마마처럼 죽음이 오면 어깨뼈 사이로 빙산처럼 죽음이 오면 나는 호기심에 가득 차 그 문으로 걸어나가보고 싶다 그 어둠의 오두막은 어떻게 생겼을까 하고 궁금해 하며 그래서 나는 모든 것을 형제처럼, 자매처럼 바라본다 시간을 하나의 관념에 지나지 않는 것으로 본다 영원을 또 하나의 가능성으로 본다 그리고 개개의 생명이 하나의 꽃이라고 생각한다 들판의 데이지처럼 흔하면서도 특유하다고 입 안의 편안한 음악과 같은 개개의 이름은 모든 음악이 그러하듯 침묵을 향해 가며 개개의 육체는 용맹한 사자이고 대지에 귀중한 어떤 것 삶이 끝나면 나는 말하고 싶다 평생 나는 경이와 결혼한 신부였노라고 세계를 두 팔에 껴안은 신랑이었노라고 삶이 끝나면 나는 내가 내 삶을 특별하고 진정하게 살았는지 궁금해 하지 않고 싶다 한숨지으며 두려워하는 모습을 보고 싶지 않다 따지고 드는 내 모습도 나는 이 세상을 그저 방문한 것으로 끝내고 싶지 않다 |

메어리 올리버 Mary Oliver (1935- )
미국 시인. 오하이오 주 메이플 하이츠 출신이다. 오하이오 주립대학교와 바사 대학에서 1년씩 공부했다. 대학을 졸업하지 않았지만 케이스 웨스턴 리저브 대학(Case Western Reserve University)에서 1980-1982년에 마서 객원 교수를 했다. 전미 문예기금, 구겐하임 연구비 등 많은 연구비와 전미도서상(1992), 퓰리쳐상(1983) 등을 포함한 많은 상을 받았다. 시집으로 No Voyage and Other Poems(1963), American Primitive(1983), New and Selected Poems(1992), West Wind(1997) 등 10여권이 있다. 장시집 The Leaf and the Cloud(1999-2000)는 1999년과 2000년에 최우수 미국시 선집에 실리기도 했다. 산문집으로는 Rules for the Dance: A Handbook for Writing and Reading Metrical Verse (1998), Blue Pastures(1995), A Poetry Handbook(1994)이 있다. 깊은 사색과 명상이 담긴 탁월한 자연시를 발표해 왔다는 평가를 받고 있다. 현재 베닝턴 대학(Bennington College)의 석좌교수로 있고 매서츄세츠의 프로빈스타운과 버몬트 주의 베닝턴에서 살고 있다.
