The Veteran

Dorothy Parker

When I was young and bold and strong,
Oh, right was right, and wrong was wrong!
My plume on high, my flag unfurled,
I rode away to right the world.
"Come out, you dogs, and fight" said I,
And wept there was but once to die.

But I am old; and good and bad
Are woven in a crazy plaid
I sit and say, "The world is so;
And he is wise who lets it go.
A battle lost, a battle won --
The difference is small, my son."

Inertia rides and riddles me;
The which is called philosophy.

도로시 파커

내가 젊고 담대하고 강했을 때는
아, 옳고 그른 게 모두 분명했다.
나는 깃털장식 세우고 깃발 날리며
세상을 바로잡으러 달려 나가
"나와라, 개들아, 싸우자!"고 소리쳤다.
하나뿐인 목숨이 분해 울었다.

하지만 이젠 늙었다. 좋고 나쁜 게
종잡을 수 없이 얽혀 있어
앉아서 나는 말한다. "세상이란 그래.
그냥 흘러가는 대로 두는 게 현명해.
지기도 하고 이기기도 하는 거야 --
그게 별 차이가 없단다, 애야."

무력증이 진행되어 나를 좀먹는다.
그것이 바로 사람들이 철학이라 부르는 것.

veteran: 경험 많은 대가. 노병. 퇴역군인.
bold: 대담한.
plume: (투구에 꽂는) 깃털 장식.
unfurl: (기 등을) 올리다. 펄펄 날리다.
right: 바로잡다.
woven: weave의 과거분사. weave=(피륙을) 짜다.
crazy: 기이한. 별난.
plaid: 격자무늬의 직물.
inertia: 활발하지 못함. 무력증.
ride: (일이) 순조롭게 진행되다.
riddle: (질병, 해악)으로 채우다. 좀먹다.

도로시 파커 Dorothy Parker (1893-1967)

미국의 단편소설가이자 시인. 위트에 가득 찬 시와 소설로 이름을 떨쳤다. 결혼 전 이름은 도로시 로스차일드(Dorothy Rothschild). 뉴저지 주 모리스타운과 뉴욕에서 공부하였다. 에드윈 폰드 파커 2세(Edwin Pond Parker II)와 결혼했다가 이혼하나 필명으로는 이때의 성을 계속 사용했다. 잡지사 Vanity Fair에서 드라마 비평가로 활약하다 신랄한 독설로 쫓겨난 뒤로 주로 자유기고가로서 활동했다. 1926년에 위트와 냉소에 넘치는 경쾌한 시들로 채운 첫 시집 Enough Rope를 내어 금방 베스트셀러를 만들었다. 그밖의 시집으로 Sunset Gun(1928), Death and Taxes(1931), Collected Poems: Not So Deep as a Well(1936) 등이 있다. 1929년에 단편소설 "Big Blonde"로 오 헨리 상을 받았다. 단편소설집으로 Laments for the Living(1930), After Such Pleasures(1933), Here Lies(1939) 등이 있다. 앨런 캠벨(Allan Campbell)과 두 번 째로 결혼한 뒤 헐리우드로 가서 시나리오 작가로 활약한다. "스타 탄생(A Star Is Born)"(1937)은 아카데미상에 추천된 이들 부부의 작품. 정치적으로는 스페인 내란에 관심을 가지고 2차 대전 뒤 헐리우드를 휩쓴 반공주의에 대항하기도 한 좌파 운동가였다.
