Identity

Julio Noboa Polanco

Let them be as flowers,
always watered, fed, guarded, admired,
but harnessed to a pot of dirt.

I'd rather be a tall, ugly weed,
clinging on cliffs, like an eagle
wind-wavering above high, jagged rocks.

To have broken through the surface of stone,
to live, to feel exposed to the madness
of the vast, eternal sky.
To be swayed by the breezes of an ancient sea,
carrying my soul, my seed, beyond the mountains of time
or into the abyss of the bizarre

I'd rather be unseen, and if

then shunned by everyone,
than to be a pleasant-smelling flower,
growing in clusters in the fertile valleys,
where they're praised, handled, and plucked
by greedy, human hands.

I'd rather smell of musty, green stench
than of sweet, fragrant lilac.
If I could stand alone, strong and free,
I'd rather be a tall, ugly weed.

나만의 삶

훌리오 노보아 폴란코

그대들은 꽃처럼 살아라.
사람들이 항상 물주고 보살피고 찬양해주지만
한낱 화분에 매인 운명이 되어라.

나는 못생긴 키다리 잡초가 되리라.
독수리처럼 절벽에 매달려
높고 거친 바위들 위에서 바람에 흔들리리라.

살기 위해 돌 껍질 뚫고 나와
미친 듯이 광활하고 영원한
하늘을 마주하리라.
시간의 산맥 너머, 경이의 심연 속으로
내 영혼, 내 씨앗을 날라주는
태곳적 바다의 산들바람에 흔들리리라.

차라리 사람들 눈에 띄지 않으리라

기름진 골짜기에 무리지어 자라면서
찬양을 받다가 결국은 탐욕스런 인간의 손에
붙잡혀 뽑히고 마는
좋은 냄새를 풍기는 꽃이 되기보다
차라리 사람들의 눈에 띄지 않아
모든 이가 피하는 잡초가 되리라.

달콤하고 향기로운 라일락의 냄새보다
차라리 퀴퀴한, 푸른 악취를 풍기리라.
홀로 굳세고 자유롭게 설 수 있다면
차라리 못생긴 키다리 잡초가 되리라.

a pot of dirt: 흙단지. 화분.
I'd rather be: 차라리 ~이 되고 싶다.
clinging on cliffs: 절벽에 매달린.
jagged rocks: 울퉁불퉁한 바위.
be swayed: 흔들리다.
abyss: 심연.
the bizarre: 기이한 것들.
shunned: 꺼림을 받는. shun: 피하다. 멀리하다.
in clusters: 무리지어.
fertile: 비옥한.
plucked: 뽑히다.
greedy: 탐욕스러운.
musty: 곰팡내 나는.
stench: 악취.
fragrant: 향기로운.
