Notes:

일본의 전통시 하이쿠(俳句, haiku) 양식으로 쓴 시. 하이쿠는 5, 7, 5의 음수율을 갖는다.
이 시는 하이쿠의 음수율을 따르지는 않았지만 동양적 직관을 보여주고 있다.

게리 스나이더 Gary (Sherman) Snyder (1930 - )

샌프란시스코 출신의 미국 시인. 오레곤 주의 포틀랜드의 리드 대학을 졸업하고 인디애너 대학과 버클리 대학에서 삼림감시원, 벌목원, 수부 등으로 일했다. 1956년부터 일본에서 선불교를 연구하면서 일상 생활에서 갖는 신비적이고 종교적인 체험을 시로 썼다. 윌트 휘트먼으로부터 에즈러 파운드, 일본의 하이쿠 영향이 두드러진다. 처음에 낸 두 시집 Riprap(1959), Myths and Texts(1960)는 벌목원과 삼림감시원으로 일하던 때의 체험을 담은 것이고, 종교적 분위기가 강한 In Six Sections from Mountains and Rivers Without End, Plus One(1965), The Back Country(1967), Regarding Wave(1969) 등은 동양철학에 대한 그의 심취를 반영하고 있다. 일찍이 비트 운동과 관련되어 있다가 1960년대 말부터 공동체 생활과 생태 운동의 중요한 대변자가 되었다. Turtle Island(1974)로 1975년에 시 부문 퓰리쳐 상을 받았고, 그밖에 시집 Axe Handles(1983), 산문집 Earth House Hold(1969), 인터뷰집 The Real Work: Interviews and Talks 1964 -1979(1980) 등을 내놓고 있다. 작년에는 한국을 방문하여 강연을 하기도 했다.
