The Rhodora

                 Ralph Waldo Emerson
  
On Being Asked Whence Is the Flower
  
In May, when sea-winds pierced our solitudes,  
I found the fresh Rhodora in the woods,  
Spreading its leafless blooms in a damp nook,  
To please the desert and the sluggish brook.  
The purple petals, fallen in the pool,          
Made the black water with their beauty gay;  
Here might the red-bird come his plumes to cool,  
And court the flower that cheapens his array.  
Rhodora! if the sages ask thee why  
This charm is wasted on the earth and sky,  
Tell them, dear, that if eyes were made for seeing,  
Then Beauty is its own excuse for being:  
Why thou wert there, O rival of the rose!  
I never thought to ask, I never knew:  
But, in my simple ignorance, suppose  
The self-same Power that brought me there brought you.   

로도라 꽃

                 랠프 월도 에머슨
  
그 꽃이 왜 피었을까라는 물음에
  
해풍이 우리가 사는 외진 곳까지 스며든 오월
나는 숲속에서 갓 피어난 로도라 꽃을 보았다
축축한 구석에 만발한 잎 없는 꽃들이
인적 없는 한가로운 개울을 즐겁게 해주고 있었다.
웅덩이에 떨어진 자줏빛 꽃잎들이
예쁜 빛깔로 검은 물을 화사하게 수놓았다.
붉은 새가 깃털을 식히러 이곳에 왔다가
제 맵시를 무색케 하는 그 꽃에 구애할지 모를 일.
로도라 꽃이여! 현자들이 너더러 왜
이런 매력을 땅과 하늘에 허비하느냐 묻거든
이렇게 말하라. 눈이 보기 위해 만들어졌다면
너에게는 아름다움이 존재 이유라고.
장미와 맞먹는 꽃아, 네가 왜 거기에 있는지
나는 물어볼 생각도 못했고 이유도 몰랐다.
다만 내 순진한 생각으로 이렇게 생각할 뿐.
나를 그곳에 가게 한 힘이 너를 피웠으리라고.

Notes:  

rhodora: 북미산 철쭉의 일종.
whence: 어디로부터(from where).
pierce: 꿰뚫다. 관통하다.
solitude: 고독. 외진 곳.
damp: 축축한.
nook: 구석. 외진 곳.
desert: 사막.
sluggish: 게으른. 완만한.
brook: 시내. 개울.
petal: 꽃잎.
gay: 즐거운. (색채가) 화려한.
plume: 깃털. 깃털 모양의 물건.
court: 환심을 사려고 하다. 구애하다.
cheapen: 값을 내리다. 싸구려로 만들다.
array: 배열. 아름다운 의상.
sage: 현자.
thee: you의 목적격 옛 어법.
excuse: 변명. 해명. 이유.
thou wert: you were의 옛 어법.
self-same: 똑같은. same을 강조하는 말.

랠프 월도 에머슨 Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803∼1882)

미국 사상가·시인. 보스턴 출생. 하버드대학에서 공부하고 이어 대학원 신학부에 진학하였다. 1829년에 목사가 되었다가 1832년에 사직하고 이듬해 가을까지 유럽여행을 하였다. 1836년에 발간한 《자연》에서 초월주의 사상을 이론화하였다. 이 사상은 《미국 학자(1837)》와 《신학부 강연(1838)》 그리고 《에세이 제1집(1841)》에서 계속 전개된다.  1836년 가을에는 그와 생각을 같이 하는 ＜초월주의 모임＞을 만들고 기관지 《다이얼(1840∼44)》을 발행한다. 에머슨 자신은 불참하였으나 초월주의 모임은 이상주의 농장 ＜브루크팜(1841∼47)＞을 만들고 사상 보급과 실천에 노력하였다. 에머슨의 사상은 《에세이 제2집(1844)》에서부터 현실주의로 기울었다. 특히 에세이 《운명(1853)》에서 사상의 수정을 시도하였고, 수정된 사상은 《대표적 인물(1850)》, 《영국적 국민성(1856)》 등의 핵심 내용이 되었다. 그는 ＜콩코드의 철인＞이라는 이름으로 세인의 존경을 받았다.
