Footprints in the Sand

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me."

The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child. I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

모래 위의 발자국

어느 날 밤 어떤 사람이 꿈을 꾸었습니다. 주님과 함께 해변을 걷고 있는 꿈이었습니다. 하늘 저편에 자신의 인생의 장면들이 번쩍이며 비쳤습니다. 한 장면씩 지나갈 때마다 그는 모래 위에 난 두 쌍의 발자국을 보았습니다. 하나는 그의 것이고 다른 하나는 주님의 것이었습니다.

인생의 마지막 장면이 비쳤을 때 그는 모래 위의 발자국을 돌아보았습니다. 그는 자기가 걸어 온 길에 발자국이 한 쌍밖에 없는 때가 많다는 사실을 알아차렸습니다. 그때가 바로 그의 인생에서는 가장 어렵고 슬픈 시기들이었다는 것도 알게 되었습니다.

그것이 몹시 마음에 걸려 그는 주님께 물었습니다. "주님, 주님께서는 제가 당신을 따르기로 결심하고 나면 항상 저와 함께 동행하시겠다고 하셨습니다. 그런데 지금 보니 제 삶의 가장 어려운 시기에는 한 쌍의 발자국밖에 없습니다. 제가 주님을 가장 필요로 했던 시기에 주님께서 왜 저를 버리셨는지 모르겠습니다."

주님께서 대답하셨습니다. "나의 소중하고 소중한 아들아, 나는 너를 사랑하기 때문에 너를 버리지 않는다. 네 시련과 고난의 시절에 한 쌍의 발자국만 보이는 것은 내가 너를 업고 간 때이기 때문이니라."

Notes:

미국인들 사이에 널리 알려진 시. 그들은 이 시가 인쇄되어 있는 카드를 주고받기도 하고 시화 액자로 만들어 집에 걸어놓기도 하며 심지어는 티셔츠 같은 데도 인쇄하여 입고 다니기도 한다. 처음에는 지은이가 알려지지 않은 시로 유통되었으나 이제는 메어리 스티븐슨이 쓴 시라는 것이 정설이 되어 있다(스티븐슨에 대해서는 아래 지은이 정보 참조). 그러나 위의 텍스트는 Margaret Fishback Powers라는 사람의 판권으로 되어 있다. 이 문제에 대해서는 Kathy Bee라는 사람의 말이 인정받고 있는 추세인 것 같다. 그녀는 메어리 스티븐슨을 직접 만나 이 시를 받은 적이 있다는 것이다. 그렇다면 Margaret Fishback Powers는 지은이가 알려져 있지 않은 이 시의 판권을 소유하게 된 셈인데 정확한 진상을 알 길이 없다. 스티븐슨이 원래 썼다는 텍스트의 이본이 또 있어서 아래에 싣는다. 여기에는 "어떤 사람(a man)"이 꿈을 꾼 게 아니고 "내(I)"가 꿈을 꾼 것으로 되어 있다.

During the low periods of my life when I was

Suffering from anguish, sorrow, or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints,

So I said to the Lord, "You promised me,
Lord, that if I followed You,
You would walk with me always.

But I noticed that during the most trying periods
Of my life there have only been
One set of prints in the sand.

Why, When I have needed You most,
You have not been there for me?"

The Lord replied,
"The times when you have seen only one set of footprints
Is when I carried you."

메어리 스티븐슨 Mary Stevenson (1922 - 1999)

미국의 펜실베니어 주 체스터에서 태어났다. 대공황기에 어머니가 세상을 떠나고 아버지는 일자리를 찾아 여섯 자매를 두고 집을 떠났다. 어려서 거리에서 춤을 배워 돈을 벌었다. 열 네 살이었던 1936년 겨울 어느 날 집안에 갇혀 눈 위의 고양이 발자국을 보고 하느님에게 기도를 하다가 영감을 받아 쓴 시가 "모래 위의 발자국"이었고 그날부터 많은 시를 쓰기 시작해서 만나는 사람들에게 주었다고 한다.
