You’re wondering if I’m lonely:
OK then, yes, I’m lonely
as a plane rides lonely and level
on its radio beam, aiming
across the Rockies
for the blue-strung aisles
of an airfield on the ocean

You want to ask, am I lonely?
Well, of course, lonely
as a woman driving across country
day after day, leaving behind
mile after mile
little towns she might have stopped
and lived and died in, lonely

If I’m lonely
it must be the loneliness
of waking first, of breathing
dawn’s first cold breath on the city
of being the one awake
in a house wrapped in sleep

If I’m lonely
it’s with the rowboat ice-fast on the shore
in the last red light of the year
that knows what it is, that knows it’s neither
ice nor mud nor winter light
but wood, with a gift for burning

내가 외로운지 알고 싶나요
그래요 난 외로워요
주파수에 맞춰 외롭게 수평으로
날으는 비행기처럼
록키산맥을 넘어
대양 위 비행장의
푸른 띠 활주로를 향해 가는

내가 외롭냐고 묻고 싶나요?
그야 외롭지요
날마다 쉬지 않고 차를 달려
대륙을 횡단하는 여인처럼,
가다가 멈춰 머물러 살다
외롭게 죽어갈 수도 있을 작은 마을들을
끊임없이 뒤로 하며 달리는 여인처럼

내가 외롭다면
그건 제일 먼저 깨어나는
외로움, 도시에 부는 새벽 첫 찬 공기를
들이마시는 외로움,
집안이 모두 잠에 쌓여 있을 때
혼자 깨어 있는 외로움이겠죠

 

내가 외롭다면
한 해의 마지막 붉은 빛 속에서
해안에 얼어붙은 나룻배와 함께 하는 외로움
나룻배는 자신이 무엇인지 잘 알아요
얼음도 진흙도 겨울 빛살도 아니고
타 버릴 수 있는 나무일뿐이라는 걸

level: 평평한. 수평의.
radio beam: 무선방향지시전파.
the Rockies: 미국의 로키 산맥.
aisles: (버스, 열차, 극장 등의) 좌석 간의 통로. 길다란 통로.
rowboat: 노를 젖는 보트.
ice-fast: 얼어 단단히 달라붙은.
mud: 진흙.

에이드리앤 리치 Adrienne Rich (1929 -- )

미국 시인, 학자, 교사, 비평가. 처음에는 형식적 기교 위주의 시를 쓰다가 개인적이고 고백적인 내용의 시를 썼다. 래드클리프 대학을 나왔다. 졸업 전에 W. H. 오든의 추천을 받아 첫 시집 A Change of World(1951)를 내었다. 이어 내놓은 시집들이 The Diamond Cutters and Other Poems (1955), Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law (1963) 등이다. 이 세 번째 시집부터 억제된 형식주의 시 스타일이 개인적 형식이 스타일로 변화한 모습을 보였다. 네 번째 시집 Necessities of Life(1966)은 거의 자유시로 씌어졌다. 1966년에 남편과 헤어진다. 60년대와 70년대에는 여성운동에 참여하고 시도 레즈비언/페미니즘 미학과 정치학의 경향을 띤다. 그 뒤에 나온 시집들은 다음과 같다. Leaflets (1969), Diving into the Wreck (1973; 전미도서상 수상), The Dream of a Common Language (1978), A Wild Patience Has Taken Me This Far (1981), An Atlas of the Difficult World (1991), Dark Fields of the Republic: Poems 1991–1995 (1995), Selected Poems 1950-1995 (1996), Midnight Salvage: Poems 1995-1998 (1999). 그 밖에도 다음과 같은 비평서들이 있다.Of Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and Institution (1976), On Lies, Secrets, and Silence (1979), Blood, Bread, and Poetry (1986), What Is Found There: Notebooks on Poetry and Politics (1993).
