Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
    Weep, and you weep alone.
For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth,
    But has trouble enough of its own.
Sing, and the hills will answer;
    Sigh, it is lost on the air.
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
    But shrink from voicing care.

Rejoice, and men will seek you;
    Grieve, and they turn and go.
They want full measure of all your pleasure,
    But they do not need your woe.
Be glad, and your friends are many;
    Be sad, and you lose them all.
There are none to decline your nectared wine,
    But alone you must drink life's gall.

Feast, and your halls are crowded;
    Fast, and the world goes by.
Succeed and give, and it helps you live,
    But no man can help you die.
There is room in the halls of pleasure
    For a long and lordly train,
But one by one we must all file on
    Through the narrow aisles of pain.

외톨이 삶

웃으라, 그러면 세상도 그대와 함께 웃으리라
    울어라, 그러면 그대는 홀로 울리라
슬프게 늙어버린 이 세상 웃음은 모자라나
    그 자신의 괴로움 이미 넘치고 넘친다.
노래하라, 그러면 언덕들이 응답하리라
    탄식하라, 한숨은 허공에 흩어지고 만다.
메아리들은 즐거운 소리에 춤을 추리라,
    하지만 근심을 토로하면 웅크리고 말리라.

기뻐하라, 그러면 사람들이 그대를 찾으리라
    슬퍼하라, 그러면 그들은 돌아서 가버린다.
사람들은 그대의 즐거움을 한껏 원하지만
    그대의 고통은 필요로 하지 않는다.
즐거워하라, 그러면 친구들이 늘어날 것이다.
    슬퍼하라, 그러면 그들을 다 잃고 말 것이다.
그대가 권하는 달콤한 술 아무도 거절하는 이 없으나
    인생의 쓴 잔은 그대 홀로 들이켜야 하리라.

잔치하라, 그러면 그대의 방들은 바글거리리라
    절식하라, 그러면 세상은 지나가고 만다.
성공하여 베풀라, 그러면 그대의 삶에 도움 되리라.
    하지만 아무도 그대의 죽음은 도와주지 못한다.
즐거움의 방들엔 여유가 있어
    길고 위엄 있는 행렬을 들일 수 있다.
하지만 좁고 긴 고통의 통로를 통해서는
    우리는 한 사람씩 한 줄로 지나갈 수밖에 없다.

Notes:

 

mirth : 환희. 떠들썩한 웃음.  
Rejoice: 기뻐하다.
Grieve: 슬퍼하다.
measure: 분량. 정도. 비율. full measure of: 온통, 전부 다.
woe: 비탄. 고통.
decline:거절하다.
nectared wine: 달콤한 술. nectar=꽃의 꿀. 신들이 마시는 생명의 술. 감로.
gall: 쓸개즙. 담즙. 쓰라림. 아픔.
Feast: 즐기다. 잔치를 베풀다.
Fast: 단식하다. 절식하다.
lordly train: 위풍당당한 행렬.
file: 한 줄로 움직이다. 일렬종대로 행진하다.
aisle: 기다란 통로. (교회, 극장, 열차 등의) 좌석 사이의 통로.

엘러 휠러 윌콕스 Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919)

미국의 시인, 작가, 저널리스트. 어렸을 때부터 대중문학을 탐독하였고 14세에 신문에 첫작품을 발표하였다. 위스콘신 대학에서 공부. 첫 시집 Drops of Water를 1872년에 내고 곧 이어 종교적인 시집 Shells(1873), 감상적인 이야기 시 Maurine(1876)를 냈다. 1883년에 에로틱한 연애 시집 Poems of Passion을 내어 대성공을 거두었다. 그 밖의 시집으로 Men, Women, and Emotions(1893), Poems of Pleasure(1888), Poems of Sentiment(1906), Gems(1912), World Voices(1918) 등이 있고, 소설로는 Mal Moulee(1885), A Double Lif (1890), Sweet Danger(1892), A Woman of the World(1904) 등이 있다. 자서전으로 The Story of a Literary Career(1905), The Worlds and I(1918)를 남겼다.
