Tonight  

            Sara Teasdale  


The moon is a curving flower of gold,
  The sky is still and blue;
The moon was made for the sky to hold,
  And I for you;

The moon is a flower without a stem,
  The sky is luminous;
Eternity was made for them,
  To-night for us.

오늘밤

달은 휘어진 황금꽃
      하늘은 파랗고 고요해.
달은 하늘이 보듬고
      나는 그대가 보듬네.

달은 줄기 없는 꽃
      하늘은 휘영청 찬란해.
영원은 하늘과 달의 것
      오늘밤은 우리 것.

사라 티즈데일 Sara Teasdale (1884 - 1933)

미국의 시인. 개인적인 주제의 짧은 서정시들을 고전적 단순성과 차분한 강렬함으로 표현하여 주목받았다. 미주리 세인트루이스에서 출생하여 사립학교에서 교육받았으며, 샤프롱의 보살핌 아래 널리 여행했다. 시카고를 자주 방문하여 그곳에서 해리엇 먼로의 〈포이트리 Poetry〉지 동인이 되었다. 시인 배첼 린지의 구혼을 거절하고 1914년 세인트루이스의 사업가인 에른스트 필싱어와 결혼한다. 1929년 이혼한 뒤 뉴욕 시로 옮겨 칩거생활을 하다가 1933년에 자살하고 만다. 1907년 처녀시집〈두제에게 바치는 소네트 외(外) Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems〉를 내어 호평을 받고, <바다로 흐르는 강물 Rivers to the Sea〉(1915)을 내어 인기 있는 시인으로 자리를 굳히며, 1918년에는 〈사랑의 노래 Love Songs>(1917)로 시부문 퓰리처상을 받았다. 그외 〈불꽃과 그림자 Flame and Shadow〉(1920), <달 그림자 Dark of the Moon〉(1926), 〈이상한 승리 Strange Victory〉(1933) 등의 시집이 있다.
