I once had a sweet little doll, dears,
The prettiest doll in the world;
Her cheeks were so red and so white, dears,
And her hair was so charmingly curled.
But I lost my poor little doll, dears,
As I played in the heath one day;
And I cried for more than a week, dears,
But I never could find where she lay.

I found my poor little doll, dears,
As I played in the heath one day:
Folks say she is terribly changed, dears,
For her paint is all washed away,
And her arms trodden off by the cows, dears
And her hair not the least bit curled:
Yet for old sakes' sake she is still, dears,
The prettiest doll in the world.

내게 작고 예쁜 인형이 있었단다, 얘들아
이 세상에서 제일 예쁜 인형이었지
두 볼이 아주 빨갛고 아주 하얀 인형이었어, 얘들아
머리카락은 아주 매력적으로 곱슬거렸지
그런데 어느 날 히스 벌판에서 놀면서, 얘들아
그 귀여운 인형을 잃어버리고 말았단다
그래서 일주일이 넘게 펑펑 울었어, 얘들아
하지만 어디에서 잃어 버렸는지 찾을 수가 없었지

그런데 어느 날 히스 벌판에서 놀면서, 얘들아
그 가여운 인형을 다시 찾게 되었단다
사람들 말이 인형이 심하게 변해 버렸대, 얘들아
인형의 칠이 다 씻겨 없어져 버리고
암소들에게 밟혀 팔도 떨어져 나가 버렸다고, 얘들아
머리카락도 이젠 조금도 곱슬거리지 않아
하지만 그 인형은 정이 들어서 내게는 아직도, 얘들아
이 세상에서 제일 예쁜 인형이란다.

Notes:

이 시는 곡이 붙어 동요로도 불리고, 제목을 짧게 줄여 “나의 작은 인형(My Little Doll)”, 또는 “잃어버린 인형(The Lost Doll)”이라고도 한다.

dear: 사랑하는 사람을 부르는 말.
charmingly: 매력적으로.
heath: 히스(황야에서 자라는 관목). 황야.
folks: 사람들. 가족.
washed away: 씻겨가 버리다.
trodden off: 짓밟혀 떨어져 나가다.
not the least bit: 조금도 ~하지 않다.
for old sakes' sake: 옛정을 생각해서.

찰즈 킹즐리 Charles Kingsley (1819-1875)

영국의 성직자, 소설가, 시인. 케임브리지에서 공부한 뒤 교구신부, 빅토리아 여왕의 사제, 케임브리지 대학의 현대사 교수, 웨스트민스터 참사회원 등을 역임하였다. 기독교사회주의의 열렬한 주창자로 사회 문제를 다룬 몇 권의 소설을 발표한 뒤, Hypatia (1853), Westward Ho! (1855),  Hereward the Wake (1866) 등의 역사소설을 내어 성공을 거두었다. 종교 문제로 존 헨리 뉴먼(John Henry Newman)과 유명한 논쟁을 벌이기도 하였다. 찰스 다윈(Charles Darwin)의 진화론을 적극 받아들인 뒤 그것에서 아이디어를 얻어 아동들 사이에 인기 있는 The Water-Babies (1863)를 썼다.
