Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,
So do our minutes hasten to their end,
Each changing place with that which goes before
In sequent toil all forwards do contend.
Nativity, once in the main of light,
Crawls to maturity, wherewith, being crowned,
Crooked eclipses 'gainst his glory fight
And Time that gave, doth now his gift confound.
Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth,
And delves the parallels in beauty's brow,
Feeds on the rarities of natures truth,
And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow;
And yet, to times, in hope, my verse shall stand,
Praising thy worth, despite his cruel hand.

인간의 생명도 시시각각 그 끝을 향해 급히 간다.
한 순간 한 순간이 그 앞의 한 순간과 교체하고
모두 서로 앞을 다투어 연이어 나아간다.
인간은 태어나서 빛의 세계에 일단 들어서면
당장 기어다니고 성인이 되지만, 그러자마자
구부정한 노쇠가 그 영광에 암영을 던진다.
은혜를 베푼 시간이 이제 그 파괴자가 되는 것이다.
시간은 젊은이의 찬란한 영광을 유린하고
아름다운 여인의 이마에 깊은 주름을 새겨 간다.
시간은 자연이 만들어 낸 희귀한 진리를 먹어 치우지만
그 큰 낫으로 베지 못하는 건 이 세상에 하나도 없다.
그래도 나의 시는 시간의 포악한 손을 이겨내고
그대의 훌륭한 가치를 계속 찬양하리라.
